Occupational Therapist Laura Anderson, from Avera St. Lukes uses Interactive Metronome with Gannon Schock to help improve the synchronization between his brain and body. It “helps [him] find a center beat on what a good beat should be for daily life.” Since using IM, Gannon has shown significant improvement. Gannon even says he likes school now.
We love to share our success stories, and this month is no different. In honor of Autism Awareness Month, we are going to be shining the spotlight on some amazing clients who have taken great strides with IM training. Sadly, many children go through injuries and conditions that would bring grown men to their knees. Often times, their good spirits and determination make all the difference in treatment. That was the case for Jimmy! After surgery to remove a brain tumor left Jimmy feeling weak and unsteady, but he wasn’t going to let it sideline him. He set his mind to getting back to being the active, happy-go-lucky kid he wanted to be and nothing was going to stop Jimmy!
Tom, a retired veterinarian diagnosed with Parkinson’s, was struggling with consistent movement. After IM training, not only was be able to improve his weight shifting but he also able to ease his reliance on his walker.

During Better Speech and Hearing Month, we wanted to share some great news about our clients with APD. We have had a lot of success stories from Providers, but this one about Louise really stood out. She was a bright young girl who was having difficulty reading and processing directions. However, between her “can do” attitude and a little IM training, she was able to improve across the board. As it turns out, she is also amazing at soccer! Read her story today.
During Iman’s IM training, his parents were given parent surveys before and after his IM program. The parent survey asked parents to rate child’s behavior on daily function tasks and communication tasks. The parents rated an improvement in 13 out of the 16 opinion statements after the completion of the IM training!
It is Stroke Awareness Month, and while strokes affects millions of people year round, it’s time to shine the light on these life-changing events. Strokes can strike anyone, anytime; it is not a condition that is limited to older individuals, or those in poor health. When Marcus suffered a stroke during infancy, the damage caused a variety of developmental delays. However, today, Marcus has started to enjoy school, playing with his friends and his vocabulary has taken off!
JJ is a bright young boy who had some motor difficulties and social issues associated with his Asperger’s syndrome. He wasn’t very active, hated sports and really just didn’t want to do much in school or around home. Nowadays, JJ is leading hikes for his Boy Scout group, playing ball at school and hosting a special pool party for his friends! What a turnaround! Carl was a young man with developmental delays, a previous head injury and a pretty toxic home environment. Fortunately, Carl has found a loving new home and he began receiving therapy for his conditions. With the dedicated support of his family, a great group of therapist and educators, and some IM training, Carl is now on the road to success. Today, he is doing good in school and he is finally able to enjoy a day in the park!
We heard the story of Franklin, a young boy with developmental delays, and we just wanted to share. He is such a happy little boy, and for years he was held back by developmental delays…Well, not anymore! Billy is an amazing young man who has autism. He is awesome at school, but was really struggling with motor planning and daily tasks, such as dressing and bathing. Dean is a young boy with an all too common problem; he has ADHD and it is affecting his behavior and ability to complete assignments at school. Scratch that…”was affecting his behavior and ability to complete assignments at school.” After just a few weeks of IM training, Dean is already working to control his impluses, he is more motivated and he is dominating spelling tests that used to give him difficulty.
“Before I started this, I didn’t have any success, and i’d just get worse and worse, just lack of interest because I wasn’t able to sit for too long,” says Malachi. “my focus has come back a lot, like, I really enjoy working out… and reading.”
Ben is a 12-year-old with ADHD, who used to have trouble in school. His grades were below average, and he was easily distracted, unable to remember much of the material taught in class. Ben struggled with homework assignments and studying for tests. He felt defeated, and was frustrated by his parents' attempts to get him to study harder. He put in the extra effort, but nothing seemed to help.
When working with children with Cerebral Palsy and Asperger’s Syndrome it sometimes initially seems that they are overconfident when you are just speaking with them. But after a few physical challenges, hearing stories from their parents and actually getting the chance to talk with them and know them better, you tend to find that the trend in self-confidence goes down a quick spiral.
