Beyond the Beat: Short- and Long-term Benefits of Synchronized Metronome Training in Children with Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy

This study set out to examine the effects of Synchronized Metronome Training (SMT), implemented through Interactive Metronome (IM), on movement kinematics in two children diagnosed with spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy (HCP).
After four weeks (or 12 sessions) of SMT, the results showed meaningful improvements in both children.
This was demonstrated through smoother and shorter movement trajectories during tasks requiring the use of both hands, with particular enhancement noted on the affected side. In single-handed tasks, one of the participants also exhibited improved smoothness on the non-affected side.
The study noted that the impacts of IM training varied between the two children, but some overall advancements in spatial and temporal organization were recorded.
Abridged Summary & Results of Study
Short- and long-term effects of synchronized metronome training in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy: A two case study
YEAR: 2012
PUBLICATION: DEVELOPMENTAL
AUTHOR: Anna-Maria Johansson, Erik Domellof & Louise Ronnqvist NEUROREHABILITATION
RESULTS:
Two children with cerebral palsy (CP) demonstrated smoother and shorter bimanual movement trajectories, especially for the affected side. Additionally, one child exhibited increased smoothness of the non-affected side. Noticeable improvement in motor
learning occurred immediately post training and was maintained at 6 months post training.
DETAILS:
- n=2 children with hemiplegic CP (17 year old girl and 13 year old boy) underwent 4-weeks/12 sessions of IM training
- uni- and bimanual upper limb movements were assessed via kinematic analysis
- pre-training
- post completed training
- 6-months post completed training
