The Components of Interactive Metronome
The core Interactive Metronome system consists of: (1) the Main Station that connects to a computer (2) a pair of Headphones for auditory feedback (3) one or more Triggering Devices and (4) the IM Universe Software
The IM Station
This is the main Interactive Metronome station
- Contains the IM Universe Training Software
- Quickly connects to a Mac/PC laptop or computer
- Calcuates real-time measurement, to the millisecond
- Performs client assessments & tracks progress
- Syncs training to cloud based portal for easy access
Triggering devices connect to the main station wirelessly or with a wired connection.
The client synchronizes his actions to the beat called for in the game or by their IM Provider
There are many types of triggering devices, from buttons the client will press, to foot tap mats and even gloves the client can wear.
The headphones connect to the main IM station either wirelessly or through a wired connection.
The client can use headphones to perform their training with minimal distraction and to ensure they can clearly hear the auditory tones that they will need to synchronize to a movement.
The client can also use external speakers but we recommend using the headphones for the best result.
IM Universe Software
The IM Universe software contains 11 animated, interactive games created by top gaming designers with a variety of engaging games adesigned to appeal to adults, teenagers and children.
Games in IM Universe
Top gaming designers created the compelling training games in IM Universe. These games keep clients interested and having fun while they improve.
IM contains over 14 animated games across these genres:
- Zen Garden
IM universe allows customers to personalize their experience by creating their own personal gaming avatar.
The client can customize their avatar to reflect their own unique personality
There are more than 14,000 different combinations available, for endless customization!
The Interactive Metronome software connects into E-Clinic, allowing clinicians to manage a client’s training and communicate with them while they work from home using our offsite, client-based IM Home product.
E-clinic allows all client training information to be synced to the cloud, messaging with clients, and clinicians can make training program adjustments as needed. E-clinic helps to coordinate care at the office and for off-site training.

How Does IM Work?
How IM Affects the Brain
The Interactive Metronome® (IM) is an evidence-based, engaging therapeutic modality used by professionals who work with pediatric and adult patients with neurological conditions that affect cognitive and motor functioning. IM is both an assessment and treatment tool and has shown improvements in the following areas of the brain:
Evidence Based Training
The Interactive Metronome® (IM) challenges your clients to synchronize a range of whole body exercises to a beat. A score is provided in milliseconds.
IM’s game-like features engage the client with auditory and visual guidance and provide real-time feedback while encouraging him/her to improve their scores.
IM Is Evidence-Based
Peer reviewed studies consistently confirm that training on IM a few sessions per week improves attention, cognition, mental processing speed, speech-language issues, executive functions, motor coordination, memory attention and more.
“… preliminary research shows a 40% or more improvement on standardized neuropsychological measures of hyperactivity and spatial working memory in children’s diagnosed with ADHD…”
READING & COMPREHENSION: “… children ages 2-5 who received 4 hrs of Interactive Metronome training outperformed those who only received the language and reading interventions on measures of reading rate, fluency and comprehension control group in reading and language skills…” | GORT4-fluency +0.32 | GORT4-comprehension +0.77 | GORT4-rate +0.96 | Reading Naturally +5.00 | DIBELS-6 +5.77
“…IM group showed re-myelination and reestablishment of critical white matter tracts and neural synchronization of bilateral prefrontal & parietal cortices while the control group demonstrated further decline.” Group that received IM + TAU outperformed the control group that received only TAU on 21 of 26 assessments (p=.0001 )
“Post-stroke rehab study on patients having strokes 2-23 years prior to study. IM training showed marked improvements in ability to grasp, pronate, and supinate affected arms & hands that had minimal active movement. Patients reported gains in ability to perform ADLs, self-efficacy and quality of life.”
Over 30,000 of the most prestigious clinicians, hospitals & universities use Interactive Metronome

Why Do Clinicians Love Interactive Metronome?
“Introducing Interactive Metronome to our facility has not only changed our approach to facilitating treatment techniques, but has also allowed us to target a population who felt there was no hope in improving their quality of life. My patients who have completed the IM program have found the ability to return to meaningful activities by improving their balance, coordination, and overall confidence in their daily lives. Not only has this program brought us great results from a treatment perspective, but it has allowed our facility to grow and be known throughout the community.”
“The IM has provided a tool for therapists across our company to engage patients in their therapy. With the IM we can push for greater gains in cognition, coordination and balance than we could before. It is a proven modaility used by therapists to get better outcomes.”
“I have been using Interactive Metronome for almost ten years and have witnessed statistically significant progress in just a few short weeks of therapy. I believe Interactive Metronome should be the first step in a therapeutic approach to improve the emotional, cognitive, motor, academic and sensory deficits of your clients. It is the only program of it’s kind that delivers results so quickly and is so easy in it’s application. It is suitable for adults and children regardless of their disabilities. It should be a part of every therapist’s practice!”

The Science Behind Interactive Metronome
Interactive Metronome® (IM) is believed to improve the resolution and efficiency of an individual’s internal brain clock(s) and temporal processing. It is hypothesized that this results in more efficient brain connectivity, communication, and synchronization via increased integrity of the brains white matter tract communication system, producing more efficient communication between critical brain networks.
- parietal-frontal brain network
- temporal processing resolution
- neural efficiency
- information processing
- attentional control system (ACS)
- brain connectivity
- brain synchronization
- brain timing
- white matter tract communication
- functional brain networks
Interactive Metronome In The News
In addition to a wealth of published research, IM has received an abundance of media attention including the CBS Early Show, CNN News, US News and World Report, as well as various segments that have aired on hundreds of TV affiliates, radio stations and national publications.
