Enhancing Timing Skills and Function in Children with Cognitive and Motor Impairments: A Retrospective Study of Interactive Metronome

Study - Published in Journal of Hand Therapy

Keywords

Pediatric, Motor Skills

This study retrospectively examines the efficacy of Interactive Metronome (IM) training in improving timing skills, hand function, and self-regulatory behaviors as reported by parents. Forty-eight children, aged 6-17, with varied motor and cognitive impairments participated in an average of 14 one-hour IM training sessions over 8.5 weeks in an outpatient therapy setting.

Improvements were significant as assessed by the IM Long Form Assessment, the Jebsen Taylor Test of Hand Function, and a parent questionnaire. These enhancements occurred despite the absence of direct skill training.

Notably, enhancements were seen in both dominant and non-dominant hands, suggesting a potential area for future research. The success of the program was attributed to the unbiased and nonjudgmental feedback provided by IM, internal motivation, parental support, and positive rehabilitation experiences.
