Name: Todd J. Sullivan, PT, PCS
Type of Professional: Pediatric Physical Therapist
Years using IM: 10
Facility Name: Blake Medical Center
Location: Bradenton, FL
Population(s) Served: Pediatrics, various diagnoses including cerebral palsy, down syndrome, developmental delay, traumatic brain injury
What made you look into IM? We needed something to help us work on rhythm and timing in our patients with coordination problems, attention problems, balance difficulties, etc.
Tell us about your business (patients served, size of practice, services offered, how often you use IM and IM-Home in daily practice): The Pediatric Therapy department at Blake Medical Center serves patients from birth to 18 years old. We have three Physical Therapists, four Occupational Therapists, and four Speech Language Pathologists, all of whom actively use IM with multiple patients. Our IM is used several times per day.
What is your favorite thing about Interactive Metronome? And IM-Home (if used)? I love the ease of set up for each patient, the variety of options for visual feedback, the control of the audio feedback, and the ability to be creative in exercise tasks using the various triggers to really individualize treatments.
What other modalities do you use in your practice that you like to combine with IM? The sky is the limit. We have used IM with Gait Mate, with the treadmill, by bouncing various balls on the floors, walls, and off the foot triggers, standing on balance-challenging surfaces, and more. We like to be creative!
What marketing methods have you found successful, which ones have failed? We don’t do much marketing specific to our Pediatric Program. Word of mouth has been one of our most successful methods of generating referrals.
Tips for other IM Providers: Keep an open mind and be creative with getting your kids to participate with the IM. Do not ever be afraid to experiment with settings, complementary toys and activities, and the environment, to get the best results for each patient.
Anything else: Keep having fun!!!!!
