Course Description
Interactive Metronome (IM) is a unique application of technology that has been shown in clinical research to improve cognitive, linguistic, motor, and behavioral functioning through its impact on the brain’s timing mechanisms. Part two of this advanced training in Interactive Metronome will enhance clinicians’ assessment and treatment outcomes for visual attention, processing, & executive functioning, critical components in reading comprehension, balance, and functional independence. Rationale, candidacy, pre & post assessment, specific IM treatment tasks, and IM treatment hierarchy will be discussed
 
Instructor(s) - One of the following:
 

Amy Vega, MS, CCC-SLP received her master’s degree in speech-language pathology from the University of South Florida in 1994 and holds the Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech Language & Hearing Association (ASHA). She specializes in adolescent and adult rehabilitation for patients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury, stroke, epilepsy, brain tumor & and other disease processes that affect communication, cognition, and behavior. She currently serves as Director of both the Clinical Education Department and the Clinical Advisory Board for Interactive Metronome, Inc. and is their Continuing Education Administrator. She provides clinical support to IM providers globally, serves as Editor in Chief for IM’s clinical publications and website FAQ/Best Practices search engine, develops IM certification materials, and is the master-trainer for IM certification instructors.

 
Course Objectives:

Target Audience:
This self-study welcomes SLP/SLPA, PT/PTA & OT/COTA who have completed the Interactive Metronome Certification course.

Instructional Level:
Intermediate

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. State a rationale for introducing supplementary visual tasks during Interactive Metronome (IM) treatment to improve visual attention & processing skills necessary for balance and functional independence;
  2. Demonstrate evidenced-based practice through appropriate use of objective pre & post treatment assessments;
  3. And creatively implement an appropriate visual attention, processing, & executive function treatment hierarchy
*Note: This course covers information that pertains to licensed therapists and therapy assistants. COTA and PTA professionals must practice IM under the supervision of a licensed OT or PT.

Specific Learning Outcomes for SLPs:

  1. State a rationale for introducing supplementary treatment tasks during IM treatment to improve visual attention, processing, & executive function skills necessary for many aspects of communication and learning;
  2. Demonstrate evidenced-based practice through appropriate use of objective speech-language and cognitive-linguistic pre & post treatment assessments;
  3. And creatively implement an appropriate visual attention, processing, & executive function treatment hierarchy to remediate communication and learning impairments.
*Note: This course covers information that pertains to licensed therapists and therapy assistants. SLPA professionals must practice IM under the supervision of a licensed SLP.
