Course Description
Stroke is the leading cause of serious long term disability in the United States. Each year approximately 795,000 people suffer from a stroke. This course is designed to expand therapist knowledge of IM as an effective treatment tool for stroke rehabilitation. We will discuss the treatment phases and how they apply to this population and provide treatment ideas to enhance your treatment sessions.
 
Instructor(s) - One of the following:
 

Michele Santer, MOT, OTR/L graduated with a Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy from Duquesne University. She is the Senior OT for Health South Western Hills in Parkersburg, WV. She treats both adults and pediatrics with CVA, TBI, orthopedic injuries, Autism, ADD and sensory processing disorders. In addition to the Interactive Metronome, she is advanced trained Sarbo therapist, Hand Mentor, Bioness H200 and L300, myofascial release, Therapeutic Listening Program, Pilates, Drivers Rehabilitation and nutritional intervention in Autism and ADD. She lectures locally on a variety of community education topics.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Follow a treatment hierarchy that promotes learning when using IM with stroke patients;
  • Establish and modify treatment parameters as indicated for optimal treatment outcomes;
  • Introduce treatment activities for remediation of stroke deficits within the context of IM sessions
*Note: This course covers information that pertains to licensed therapists and therapy assistants. COTA and PTA professionals must practice IM under the supervision of a licensed OT or PT.

Specific Learning Outcomes for Speech-Language Pathologists & Audiologists:

  • Follow a treatment hierarchy that promotes learning when using IM for the treatment of cognitive-communicative disorders following stroke;
  • Establish and modify treatment parameters as indicated for optimal treatment outcomes;
  • Introduce treatment activities for remediation of cognitive-communicative deficits within the context of IM sessions.
*Note: This course covers information that pertains to licensed therapists and therapy assistants. SLPA professionals must practice IM under the supervision of a licensed SLP.
