Course Description
IM is a neurological and motor treatment program that is redefining traditional expectations for functional recovery. Learn how thousands of OTs/SLPs/PTs and ATCs around the country are using IM to improve cognitive and physical deficits of patients who suffer from Sensory Integration, CVAs, developmental disorders, Autism, amputation, neurological disorders, balance/vestibular disorders, ADD/ADHD, and brain injury. This self-study course welcomes OT/COTAs, SLP/SLPAs, PT/PTAs, ATCs, Educators and other patient care providers. No prior knowledge of IM is required. This course includes clinical basis, research findings, application, benefits, 6 phases of IM with hands-on activities that you can do at your convenience. This self-study course will take you approximately 10 hours to complete. *This course provides full Interactive Metronome (IM) Certification (IMC), pending passing a written exam.

Course Objectives:

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Cite specific research studies supporting the efficacy of IM in order to educate the lay public and provide evidence-based practice;
  • Competently implement IM assessments and interpret results in order to develop individualized treatment plans;
  • Create and execute individualized treatment plans by adjusting IM settings as indicated for each individual patient and integrating the six phases of IM treatment with discipline-specific clinical best practices;
  • And produce and interpret IM reports in order to document improvement in function.
*Note: This course covers information that pertains to licensed therapists and therapy assistants. COTA and PTA professionals must practice IM under the supervision of a licensed OT or PT.

Specific Learning Outcomes for SLPs

Upon completion of this course, SLPs will be able to:

  • Cite specific research studies supporting the efficacy of IM in order to educate the lay public and provide evidence-based practice for remediation of speech, language, and cognitive-linguistic disorders;
  • Competently implement IM assessments and interpret results in order to develop individualized treatment plans;
  • Create and execute individualized treatment plans by adjusting IM settings as indicated for each individual patient and integrating the six phases of IM treatment with SLP clinical best practices;
  • And produce and interpret IM reports in order to document improvement in speech, language, and/or cognitive-linguistic functioning.
*Note: This course covers information that pertains to licensed therapists and therapy assistants. SLPA professionals must practice IM under the supervision of a licensed SLP.

    Effective July 1, 2011, individuals must meet at least one of the following conditions in order to be eligible to earn ASHA CEUs.
  • ASHA Member (includes Life member and International affiliates)
  • ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) Holder
  • Licensed by a state or provincial regulatory agency to practice speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology
  • Credentialed by a state regulatory agency to practice SLP or audiology
