LIVE WELL: Interactive Metronome helps stroke patients recover
Watch the Video

Therapists at HealthSouth Deaconess Rehabilitation Hospital have a new tool to help patients who have difficulty walking, talking and organizing their thoughts after suffering a stroke or debilitating injury. The hospital recently acquired the Interactive Metronome and has been using it to help patients relearn how to perform tasks many people take for granted.

The Interactive Metronome is a computerized training program for the brain. The device emits a rhythmic reference tone that can be adjusted to go faster or slower. Patients listen to the tones and synchronize clapping, tapping or other hand and feet exercises to the beat. Guide tones that have a different sound may be added to the program so patients receive immediate feedback letting them know whether to speed up or slow down.

Physical therapist Sara Snelling said the Interactive Metronome creates positive changes in the brain by improving its efficiency so multiple areas of the brain regain the ability to work together. The therapy has been used for children and adult patients.

"With the Interactive Metronome you've got that patient engaged in very specific physical and cognitive tasks, Snelling said. "They're repeatedly doing similar tasks over and over to change the brain into recognizing what is normal again.

"The movements they are doing are rhythmic and synchronized, which is something you and I may take for granted in our everyday living and moving around. And they get immediate feedback with the machine so they will know in milliseconds whether they are on target."
