Course Description
In this course, Dara Coburn, CCC-SLP, reviews & expands upon her previous presentation, entitled Cueing with Rhythm to Improve SLP Treatment Outcomes. Use of rhythmic cueing is a long-standing best practice in the field of speech-language pathology, its efficacy supported by many research studies. Interactive Metronome (IM) provides a unique application of timing & rhythm by not only providing the stimulus for timing (or the cue), but also feedback for timing at the millisecond level so that the patient can improve mental timing critical for speech, language, and cognitive-communicative abilities. The primary goals of this course are to provide a rationale for integration of this technology into the practice of speech-language pathology and instruction on its clinical application. In particular, this course will cover the application of newer technology (such as the insole trigger) to address rhythmic cueing for cognitive-communicative skills within the milieu of a functional dynamic environment.
Contact hours are offered pending successful completion of a written exam at the end of the course.

Dara Weger, MS, CCC-SLP received her undergraduate and masters degree from the University of Central Arkansas and holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dara is the National Program Champion for Interactive Metronome within the HealthSouth Corporation. She also serves as Interactive Metronome’s Clinical Support contact person for Life Care Centers of America. With expertise and experience in the field of neurological disorders, Dara was able to accept this new treatment tool and has been able to successfully integrate it into her practice by modifying it to individually meet her patient's needs.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Select patients who will benefit from rhythmic cues to improve cognitive-communicative abilities;
  2. Design & implement individualized treatment plans that take into consideration the communication needs of individuals in more dynamic, functional contexts;
  3. Select the most appropriate access for rhythmic cueing for each patient when using Interactive Metronome, including hand, foot, and insole triggers depending upon individual cognitive/physical abilities and treatment goals in order to improve functional communication skills.
*Note: This course covers information that pertains to licensed therapists and therapy assistants. SLPA professionals must practice IM under the supervision of a licensed SLP.
