Interactive Metronome Helps Patients Retrain Their Brains

PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER) -- For centuries the metronome has helped musicians keep the beat. Now a similar concept called 'Interactive Metronome' is helping some Mainers overcome speech disorders by 'retraining' their brains.

The brain-based therapy was originally designed to rehabilitate adults with neurological problems. Now the interactive therapy is helping children like seven-year-old Jack Tower.

As he listens to a steady cow bell tone through his headphones, Jack must anticipate the beat and clap his hands in sync with it. A tone lets him know if he is on time, early or late.

"What it does is work on the rhythm and timing of the brain and it works on specific areas of the brain. It's working on strengthening the frontal cortex of the brain so that the rest of brain is more efficient," said Suzanne Sylvester, speech pathologist.

Suzanne Sylvester specializes in stuttering. She started using the interactive metronome earlier this year to help Jack, who has had a stuttering problem since he was four years old. For Jack's parents, it was the breakthrough they had been praying for.

"We saw a huge improvement with him, just as he would have been stuttering as he went into class with Suzanne and when he was walking out we could see the difference," said Lisa Tower.

Interactive Metronome therapy is being used to help people with a variety of other problems including autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injuries, balance disorders and stroke.
