Course Description
This presentation will review the clinical research supporting the role of rhythm and timing on a wide array of human function. In addition, this session will provide an overview of the use of rhythm and timing exercises (specifically the Interactive Metronome) that have been shown to improve cognitive and motor function in pediatric and adult rehabilitation. We will give examples of IM’s use in speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy.

Dara Coburn, MS, CCC-SLP received her undergraduate and masters degree from the University of Central Arkansas and holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dara is the National Program Champion for Interactive Metronome within the HealthSouth Corporation. She also serves as Interactive Metronome’s Clinical Support contact person for Life Care Centers of America. With expertise and experience in the field of neurological disorders, Dara was able to accept this new treatment tool and has been able to successfully integrate it into her practice by modifying it to individually meet her patient's needs.

Brad Cohen,  is Vice President of the Western US for Interactive Metronome, Inc. His background in cognitive-behavioral rehabilitation, with experience in both education and mental healthcare, has led to his involvement with several programs in various educational settings, inpatient and outpatient facilities and private practices. He has also been involved in grant writing along with working under grant-funded pilot programs. He has lectured extensively on various topics, including the use of technology applications relating to pediatric and adult rehabilitation and education.

Kelli Crovo,  graduated Summa Cum Laude from University of Florida in 2004. She has over two years of post-graduate work in the health field and has clinical experience in both the hospital and out-patient rehabilitation setting. She has been involved in designing educational tools for new technologies and has lectured on the link between health care and technology.

Dale Ellicott,  is Manager of Rehabilitation Technologies for Interactive Metronome, Inc. His education includes an undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University in Sport Medicine and Master Degree in Health promotion and Education from Vanderbilt University. Clinically he has served multiple higher education institutions by directing intercollegiate sports medicine programs. Additionally, he was the coordinator for conditioning and an athletic trainer with the Philadelphia Phillies during which time he helped to develop their injury prevention programs. Didactically he was the director of a Sports Medicine Education Minor program for three years and has over 8 years of experience instructing collegiate level courses in Health Promotion, Physiology, Exercise Science, and Sports Medicine. He is currently using his education and clinical experience to develop and deliver education programs concerning the implementation and use rehabilitation technology.

Al Guerra,  is Vice President of Rehabilitation Technologies for Interactive Metronome, Inc. His background is in rehabilitation and pediatric hospital administration and in the fulfillment of clinical services to underserved communities. He is a frequent conference speaker on the use of technology applications in rehabilitation.

Andrew Dillen Hartley, OT graduated from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, school of Occupational Therapy in 1995 and moved to the USA in 1996. He is co-owner of Advanced Therapy Solutions, Inc, an outpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy practice serving clients of all ages in five locations.

Mr. Hartley has 14 years of clinical experience and is trained in multiple treatment approaches with both adults and pediatrics. His interests include the treatment of deficits related to stroke, traumatic brain injury, Autism, development disorders, sensory processing disorders, ADHD, ADD and learning disabilities in infants, children and adults. His experience with sensory integration, neuromuscular re-education, brain gym, vision therapy, environmental adaptation, Tai-Chi, yoga and technology based treatment approaches for all ages has served him well as a presenter of certification courses, webinars and professional seminars. Mr. Hartley serves as a clinical advisor for Interactive Metronome and other “Therapy based” companies in research, protocol and practice development areas.

Lorraine S. Inducci, CCC-A, Au.D. received her doctorate degree in Audiology from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry's School of Audiology. She has been an audiologist for 27 years. She has held the Certificate of Clinical Competence issued by American Speech Hearing Language Association since 1984. Dr. Inducci is considered an expert in the field of auditory processing disorder and children with language based learning disabilites. Dr. Inducci is on staff at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in Hamilton New Jersey where she works with a broad population of infants through adult. She performs audiological evaluations, auditory processing testing and therapy, hearing aid fittings, and vestibular testing. Dr. Inducci has had a private practice in Yardley Pennsylvania since 1996. She employs teachers and therapists to evaluate and treat children with auditory processing, A.D.H.D., P.D.D., and language learning disabilities. Her practice concentrates on evidence-based therapies and practices which Dr. Inducci is certified in providing. These therapies include Fast ForWord Language programs, The Listening Program, Interactive Metronome, Lindamood-Bell programs, as well as other multisensory reading programs. Dr. Inducci serves the community as an advocate and expert witness for children with various learning disabilities, including those in the autism spectrum. She often lectures to the community and to professionals on Brain Fitness, APD, Autism, ADHD, and vestibular rehabilitation. Dr. Inducci became an IM provider soon after the company went public. She is proud to be a member of the Interactive Metronome family and looks forward to educating the professional community on IM therapy and best practices.

Mary Jones, OTR/L, LMT, CIMT  graduated from St. Loye's School of Occupational Therapy (UK) in 1986. Has been an Occupational Therapist for 20 (+) years and has been practicing in the USA since 1993. Additional training has included a BS in Healthcare and Social Welfare from Manchester University in 1992, Massage Therapy License in 1996, NDT certification in 1994. Mary has worked in a variety of healthcare settings in both the USA and the UK. These include home health in the inner-city (London), orthopedics, geriatric psychiatry, outpatient rehab, brain injury specialty (adult and pediatric) and pediatric outpatient therapy. Clinical further education includes NDT advanced courses, infant massage certification, cranio-sacral therapy, myofascial release techniques, motor control and the development of motor learning, Therapeutic Listening Program, Integrated Listening Systems, Brain Gym, Pilates, Active Isolated Stretching Techniques, Visual-motor Training, Vestibular Training, Beckman Oral Motor Assessment and Intervention, Handwriting Without Tears, ADHD and Nutrition Interventions, Aromatherapy, Aquatic Therapy, Sensory Integration assessment and interventions, Autism assessment and interventions, Interactive Metronome Certification and Development of Best Practice Strategies with IM. Mary owns her own pediatric practice "Sensational Kids LLC", based out of Bradenton, FL and operating within clinic, school, home and community based settings. Mary has lectured extensively in her field at a local, national and international level. Mary is keen to explore new avenues for use of IM within her field and authored the IM Pediatric Best Practice Manual in 2009 and co-authored the IM Adult Best Practice Manual. Mary consequently went on to develop the live Pediatric Best Practice Course and numerous webinar presentations to assist providers in their program development and IM 'journey'.

Barbara Lindner, M.Ed., OT/L graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science and a degree in Occupational Therapy in 1974. She received a Master of Special Education with an emphasis on severe disabilities from Lehigh University in 1986. She is president of Therapeutic Integration Services, Inc. and recently sold her pediatric sensory integration clinic in Naples FL. Barbara has a passion for working with children. Her advanced training includes the Southern California Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests certification, Auditory Integration Training, Advanced Therapeutic Listening, Listening Fitness, Brain Gym, Sensory Defensiveness, and a variety of sensory integration interventions. She received her RIMC from Interactive Metronome in 2003 and has found the Interactive Metronome to be the most exciting treatment modality she has used. Barbara has appeared on local television shows promoting IM. She also has presented at autism and sensory integration conferences, as well as sharing presentations with Carol Kranowitz, author of The Out-of-Sync Child and Annabel Stehli, author of Sound of a Miracle, A Child’s Triumph Over Autism. Barbara is very excited to be teaching IM courses.

Jonathan P. McKee, OTR/L earned a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from the Medical College of Georgia and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Central Florida. He is the proprietor of Life Cycle Therapy providing specialized evidence based treatments focusing on the child’s individual potential to improve. In his practice he uses specific sensory-based approaches to make neurological changes. Jonathan earned the RIMC designation from IM in 2006 and has successfully implemented the IM Home programs with children and adults for the past several years. He has been interviewed for both the Birmingham News and TalkAutism about the success his clients have experienced with IM. He has earned various certifications and licenses and received the Achiever’s Award for Dedicated Service to Children. Jonathan has focused on bringing the IM conveniently to his clients’ homes and has learned how to adapt the IM for clients ranging from limited to accelerated abilities.

Joe Miller,  is Vice President of the Western US for Interactive Metronome, Inc. He has been at the forefront of the introduction of Neuro technologies to the rehabilitation industry. While coordinating the development of several rehab technologies Joe has worked with researchers in the field of neuro rehabilitation to design clinical courses in evidence based neuro recovery. Joe is a frequent speaker at national and state association conferences.

Nicole Smith, MS, CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist and graduated from the University of South Florida with a Master's in Communication Sciences and Disorders. During her graduate program, she completed a thesis that examined the relationship between African American English and phonological processing skills. The study results were presented at the 2001 ASHA Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Nicole has worked in a variety of pediatric settings including the school system, head start programs, and pediatric home health. She currently works for one of the largest pediatric and geriatric inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation hospitals in the country. She treats children with a variety of diagnoses including meningitis, stroke, brain injury, anoxic encephalopathy, developmental delay, speech delay, autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, etc. She also works with adults with a variety of diagnoses including stroke, encephalopathy, brain injury, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, dementia, etc. She also completes on-site Modified Barium Swallow Studies with both pediatric and adult patients. She is certified in Vital Stim and Interactive Metronome. Nicole serves on the CVA committee, facilitates the monthly Brain Injury Support Group, and provides staff education for the Interactive Metronome and Gait Mate programs at the hospital. In addition to her full-time position, she works for a geriatric home health company and also has several private clients. She really enjoys the diverse patient population that she gets to work with everyday!

She has been certified in Interactive Metronome since 2006 and uses it on a daily basis with patients, both children and adults, with great success. In 2008, she became a clinical instructor for Interactive Metronome and has had the pleasure of training other professionals across the country as to the benefits of this program. She most recently contributed her knowledge and experience to the Adult Best Practices Manual for advanced training. She currently resides in Clearwater, Florida.

Shelley Thomas, MPT received her physical therapy degree from the Mayo Clinic in 1999 and is currently the Director of Rehabilitation at Idaho Elks Rehabilitation Hospital in Boise, Idaho. She has worked primarily adults with neurological and general medical issues and has embraced incorporating Interactive Metronome and Gait Mate into treatment sessions. She serves as the lead therapist at her facility working with physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapists to educate them about how to incorporate IM and Gait Mate into their treatments to improve functional outcomes. Shelley has been teaching IM Certification Courses since 2008 and has contributed to the development of the Gait Mate Certification Course.

Janey Tolliver, MA, CCC SLP received her undergraduate and masters degree from the University of Tennessee. She has worked for twenty-five years in pediatric rehabilitation in hospital, university, and clinic settings. She is currently in private practice in Knoxville, Tennessee where she specializes in the treatment of autism, motor speech disorders, auditory processing disorders, and reading. Janey is certified in pediatric neuro-developmental treatment and is trained in use of the PROMPT method for treatment of apraxia, Sequenced Oral Sensory Therapy, applied behavioral analysis, the Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program, and the Visualizing Verbalizing program for the treatment of reading comprehension deficits. Janey has used Interactive Metronome with a wide variety of patients and has observed the very positive effect of IM on functional outcomes. She is dedicated to educating professionals and parents about Interactive Metronome and making it more widely available to the pediatric and school-aged populations.

Amy Vega, MS, CCC-SLP received her master’s degree in speech-language pathology from the University of South Florida in 1994 and holds the Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech Language & Hearing Association (ASHA). She specializes in adolescent and adult rehabilitation for patients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury, stroke, epilepsy, brain tumor & and other disease processes that affect communication, cognition, and behavior. She currently serves as Director of both the Clinical Education Department and the Clinical Advisory Board for Interactive Metronome, Inc. and is their Continuing Education Administrator. She provides clinical support to IM providers globally, serves as Editor in Chief for IM’s clinical publications and website FAQ/Best Practices search engine, develops IM certification materials, and is the master-trainer for IM certification instructors.

 
Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the research supporting the importance of rhythm and timing (motor planning and sequencing) to all areas of rehabilitation
  2. State the correlation between rhythm and timing deficits and cognitive and motor deficiencies;
  3. Be aware of the role of advanced technology in improving rehabilitation outcomes
*Note: This course covers information that pertains to licensed therapists and therapy assistants. COTA and PTA professionals must practice IM under the supervision of a licensed OT or PT.

Specific Learning Outcomes for SLPs:

  1. SLPs will demonstrate evidence-based practice through knowledge regarding available research and supporting literature for use of Interactive Metronome (IM) in the remediation of speech/language and cognitive/linguistic disorders;
  2. SLPs will state the role of rhythm and timing in the neurological development of speech-language and cognitive-linguistic abilities;
  3. SLPs will effectively communicate the rationale for use of IM in the treatment of speech-language and cognitive-linguistic disorders to patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals and third party payor sources.
*Note: This course covers information that pertains to licensed therapists and therapy assistants. SLPA professionals must practice IM under the supervision of a licensed SLP.
